A boardwalk which allows you to enjoy the unique flora and fauna of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) has been reopened after refurbishment.
The new Llyn Maelog boardwalk, near Rhosneigr has been made from sustainably sourced recycled plastic ensuring considerably greater longevity than the previous timber structure and has improved access to local green spaces.
Works to replace the old wooden boardwalk were funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund and carried out by Anglesey-based, A E & A T Lewis Ltd.
The 332m boardwalk passes through a section of reed beds along the banks of Llyn Maelog. Llyn Maelog is an important environmental site within the Isle of Anglesey National Landscape (formally known as Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)).
The site is also designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its unique ecological and geological features. More information on the designation is available on the Anglesey nature website.
Anglesey’s Leisure, Tourism and Maritime Portfolio Holder, Councillor Neville Evans, and fellow Crigyll ward representative, Councillor Douglas Fowlie, have welcomed the new boardwalk.
Councillor Evans said, “Llyn Maelog is a valued part of our local community, and we’re delighted to see the SPF funded work now completed and the boardwalk open to all once again.”
Councillor Fowlie added, “The new boardwalk looks fantastic. It’s significant improvement on the old one and will ensure that it remains accessible for residents and visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of Llyn Maelog and the surrounding area for many years to come. Thank you to everyone who has worked hard on the project, to replace the old damaged and dangerous boardwalk.”
The new boardwalk is 1.2m wide with a splay at the beginning (Southwest end), one passing bay and a wider viewpoint area at the end (Northeast end). It is also a public right of way.
Anglesey Council Leader, Councillor Gary Pritchard, explained, “I’m pleased to see such an important community asset refurbished. Hopefully, it will encourage more people to walk along this public right of way and others in the area, as a means of improving their health.”
He added, “I’d also like to thank our Destination Team for securing this vital SPF backing and AE&AT Lewis for doing such a great job.”
