Woodland skills and traditional marram grass weaving will be amongst a whole host of countryside activities celebrated as part of the Holy Island Landscape Partnership’s third heritage fair.
The free event will be held at the Holyhead Breakwater Country Park on Saturday 5 July (10am until 4pm).
Other activities will also include:
- country crafts
- archaeology activities
- medieval re-enactment
- coracle building and rowing demonstrations
- clay modelling and facepainting
- archery
- information stalls
A series of guided walks will also take place on the day so adults and children can discover the geology, history and wildlife of Holy Island, volunteer with a Keep Wales Tidy litter pick, and learn how to forage wild plants.
Drystone walling skills demonstrations and workshops, which visitors can take part in, will also highlight the Landscape Partnership’s ‘Conserving Our Traditional Boundaries’ project.
The project works with local secondary schools and volunteers to repair and restore the Quillets, a unique field system erected by local quarrymen, and a distinctive feature of Holyhead Mountain’s heritage landscape.
Holy Island Landscape Partnership Community Project Officer, Paul Edwards explained, “The Partnership’s vision is to raise awareness of the fascinating and unique history, landscape, and nature on Holy Island working with local communities, schools, and visitors.
“Through promoting a better understanding of the heritage of the area we hope to foster a sense of place that will ensure historical assets are celebrated and protected for future generations. We are grateful to all our partners who will be providing interesting and fun activities for all ages on the day.”
The Holy Island Landscape Partnership is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and works with local communities to deliver activities that identify, explore, conserve, and share the unique and fascinating heritage and environment of Ynys Cybi.
The Partnership’s 19 projects include: accessing our heritage, heritage skills, local learning, discovering our hidden heritage, controlling invasives, enhancing heathland and supporting sustainable management, Ynys Cybi and Us community projects, and enjoying our coast responsibly.
Leisure, Tourism and Maritime portfolio holder, Councillor Neville Evans, said, “I’m delighted to see the Holy Island Heritage Fair return for a third year. This event showcases some of the great work undertaken by The Holy Island Landscape Partnership to realise the Council’s regeneration, countryside and destination programmes. It also gives residents and visitors an opportunity to learn more about the local area as well as taking part in a variety of interesting activities and demonstrations.”
Pay and display parking will be available with free overflow parking located at the field adjacent to Breakwater Road.
