Consultation on improving recycling rates gets underway

A new consultation aimed at helping reduce household waste and improve recycling rates on Anglesey gets underway.

Launched on Monday 11 September, residents and local communities are being asked for their views on the county council’s new ‘Resource and Waste Strategic Plan 2023 to 2028’ before it is adopted later this year.

The new strategic plan aims to see more of our household waste reduced, reused and recycled.

The plan sets out four key areas:

  1. More focus on reducing and reusing our household waste
  2. Opportunities to recycle more of our household waste
  3. Maintaining clean streets, beaches and public areas and reducing fly-tipping
  4. Improving recycling within council buildings

The new strategy aims to improve household recycling on Anglesey from 64% to 70% - a target which is set out in our Council Plan 2023 to 2028

Chief Waste Management Officer, Meirion Edwards said, “Over recent years we have seen improvements in our recycling rate and the amount of general waste we produce – this is largely down to the fantastic efforts of our residents.”

He added, “However, we all need to do more. That’s why we are eager to work with residents to ensure that the aims outlined are achieved. I’d urge everyone to take this opportunity to outline their views on this very important subject.”

Anglesey’s Highways, Property and Waste Portfolio Holder, Councillor Dafydd Rhys Thomas explained, “This new strategic plan will help us in our efforts to reduce household waste, increase our recycling rates in order to meet Welsh Government targets and support our own goal of achieving net zero status by 2030.”

He added, “I would encourage all residents to have their say before the consultation period closes on October 20th.”

The public consultation will be open from 11 September until 20 October 2023.

Hard copies are also available to view and complete at the Contact Môn reception at the Council Offices, Llangefni.

Ends 13 September 2023
