Course Outline
This course will look at prevention, understanding and how to de-escalate distressed reactions by elders with dementia.
Aims of the Course
The emphasis is on Person Centred knowledge and the information staff need to incorporate in daily care/interactions. We explore Thomas Kitwood’s Flower of Needs and how to meet those needs for the elder. We look at situations that could arise which staff may feel are aggressive or challenging. We visit de-escalation best practice, discuss tried and tested interventions in how to deescalate anger and fear and finish the day with how to analyse incidents and use that knowledge to reduce or eliminate distress
