The service is provided by the education authority and is considered to be an essential support service not only to pupils but also to the county’s schools.
The general aim of the service is to attempt to solve problems which prevent children from benefiting from the education which is available, by offering advice or practical assistance.
Emphasis is placed on:
- attendance of children in schools
- child protection
- children with special needs
- supervision of the arrangements for the employment of children
Usually schools refer cases to the service but children and families can contact the education welfare officer directly in the education department.
