This information is about general free school meals entitlement.
If you are already entitled, please see our page for free school meals during the Covid-19 (coronavirus) outbreak.
If your child is eligible for free school meals it means they can enjoy delicious, healthy meals without the bills and the fuss of making packed lunches.
School meals will give your child a real appetite for learning and help them to increase their energy. Claiming Free School Meals could save your family’s budget around £400 a year for each secondary school pupil and £370 for each primary school pupil!
Your child may be entitled to receive free school meals if you are entitled to receive one of the following:
- Income Support
- Income Based Jobseekers Allowance
- support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Child Tax Credit provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and their annual income does not exceed £16,190. (HM Revenue and Customs are responsible for assessing the level of annual income.)
- guarantee element of State Pension Credit
- Working Tax Credit ‘run-on’ - the payment someone may receive for a further four weeks after they stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
- Universal Credit with take home earnings from work of no more than £7400 per year (as calculated for Universal Credit purposes)
Free school meals are also available to nursery children who attend full days and sixth form students who attend school on a full time basis.
If you claim Free School Meals your school will receive extra funding for every child registered! This is called the Pupil Deprivation Grant which gives the school £918 per year for each pupil.
This is spent on extra resources to support your children to achieve their full potential.
