This is a statutory notice by the council of its intention to build a new secondary school building to replace the existing Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi building.
Notice is given in accordance with section 42 of the School Standards and Organisation (Wales) Act 2013 and the School Organisation Code that the Isle of Anglesey County Council (herein after “the local authority”), having consulted such persons as required, proposes to:
- construct a new building for Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi, Holyhead, Ynys Môn LL65 1NP which is currently maintained by the local authority.
- reduce the capacity of Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi, and the aim by 2029 is for it to be a Welsh medium community school and it will be maintained by the local authority at a site near Holyhead Leisure Centre, Holyhead, LL65 2YE for boys and girls aged 11-18.
The local authority undertook a period of consultation before deciding to publish this proposal. A consultation report containing a summary of the issues raised by consultees, the proposer’s responses and the views of Estyn is available on the local authority’s website.
It is proposed to implement the proposal on 1 September 2030. The new Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi building will still be a community school. The Local Authority will remain as the admission authority.
In September 2025, there were 826 pupils attending Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi. The current pupil capacity of the school is 1,170. The proposed capacity of the new school building will decrease to 900.
The number of pupils to be admitted in each relevant age group in the first year of implementation at the new school building will be 150 for years 7-11 and 75 for years 12 and 13. No change in the type of Additional Learning Needs (ALN) provision is proposed.
Pupils attending Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi in the year prior to the proposed new school building opening would automatically transfer to the new Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi building subject to parental preference. Transport arrangements to the proposed new school building from the catchment area of the present Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi will be in line with the authority’s School Transport Policy.
Within a period of 28 days after the date of publication of these proposals, that is to say by 11:59pm on 3 December 2025, any person may object to the proposals.
