Works to increase teaching capacity in RAAC affected schools

Significant site surveys and planning works have been undertaken at both Ysgol David Hughes and Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi as we respond to the continuing RAAC emergency.

Remediation designs have been developed as we now look to further enhance teaching capacity within both schools.

Scaffolding works underway which should provide access to sixth form area by Monday 25 September. This will provide a significant boost by releasing additional space and providing more teaching capacity within the school.

Remedial works to the cafeteria are expected to begin on Monday 25 September and should take around three weeks. When complete this will allow full access to the cafeteria. We are also developing a phased programme to carry out remedial works to the other RAAC affected areas of the school as soon as possible.

From Monday 25 September 25, the school will increase the access to face-to-face teaching by one year group. Online learning will continue to be provided to the year groups not in the school building during the week.

Anglesey Chief Executive, Dylan J Williams, explained, “We continue to work closely with both head teachers and are intensely aware of the challenges faced by pupils, parents and school staff. We have made good progress at both David Hughes and Caergybi; but unfortunately, it will take time to implement works which will allow further use of these buildings.

“We are working closely with the school community, external contractors and colleagues in Welsh Government to find sustainable and, more importantly, safe solutions to these RAAC problems.”

Council Leader, Councillor Llinos Medi, added, “We recognise that there is frustration at the situation and thank everyone for their patience and understanding. Please rest assured that we are doing everything we can, as quickly as we can, to ensure a safe return to face-to-face learning for all pupils.”
