Team Ynys Môn congratulated after its most successful Island Games

With the closing ceremony just underway at the 19th International Island Games in Guernsey, Ynys Môn is celebrating its most successful Games ever.

Competing against 23 other islands from around the world, Ynys Môn has secured its biggest medal haul - a staggering 18 medals (6 Gold, 7 Silver and 5 Bronze) – as the ‘mini-Olympics’ ended today (Friday 14 July).

Stand-out performances included an athletics double gold for Iolo Hughes in both the men’s 800m and 1500m; and gold and silver for his sister, Cari Hughes, in the 800m and 1500m respectively. Osian Perrin claimed an Island Games record time in winning gold in the men’s 5000m with Ffion Roberts (400m) and shooter, David Tavernor (English Skeet Individual), also claiming gold.

In the men’s football final earlier this afternoon, Ynys Môn also won silver following defeat to Jersey.

These excellent performances and many others help Ynys Môn surpassed its previous best of 14 medals (2 Gold, 3 Silver and 9 Bronze) in Jersey in 2015; as well as the greatest number of gold medals (5) won, again in Jersey back in 1997.

Council Leader, Councillor Llinos Medi, congratulated all the Island’s competitors, coaches, support staff and volunteers - who form part of the Ynys Môn Island Games Association - on their amazing success.

Councillor Medi said, “This has been Ynys Môn’s most successful Island Games yet – it’s a fantastic achievement and testament to all the hard work undertaken by the Ynys Môn Island Games Association.”

“There have been many great performances during the Games and Team Ynys Môn has done us proud once again. I’m certain that they will inspire future athletes and competitors to represent our island as we look forward to hosting our first ever Island Games in 2027.”

She added, “Perhaps we can even dream about beating the Guernsey medal haul on home turf in 2027.”

Ynys Môn is one of the founding members of the inter-island sporting competition with the first Games held on the Isle of Man back in 1985.
