Council leader, Councillor Llinos Medi, has expressed her disappointment and sadness as the 2 Sisters poultry processing plant closes today (Friday 31 March).
As of 1 April, it is estimated that only some 20-25 of the 730 strong workforce will employed on-site.
A task force established by the Welsh Government, in collaboration with the UK Government and Isle of Anglesey County Council, will continue to provide support to affected employees and the wider community.
This includes access to a special employment support hub set up at the Bryn Cefni Business Centre, in Llangefni. The hub is currently offering help and advice to those affected by the closure with advice from Working Wales, Citizens Advice and Job Centre Plus.
All former 2 Sisters employees are being urged to make use of the re-employment and training support now on offer.
Contact details for the employment support hub, Department for Work and Pensions and other support streams can be received by emailing: Anglesey.employer-partnershipteam@dwp.gov.uk
Councillor Medi said, “Today is a difficult day for the 2 Sisters workforce and their families. The loss of more than 700 jobs will also have a devastating impact on communities here on Anglesey and across the northwest Wales region.”
“Our priority is to support them as much as possible and ensure that all 2 Sisters task force partners continue to work together on their behalf.”
She added, “The employment support hub in Llangefni is on hand to provide as much support as possible to help employees find alternative employment or retraining. It’s important that staff make use of the advice and resources on offer to help during this difficult time.”
“We will also focus on the long-term future of the site and work with partners to ensure that it can be used for employment purposes once again.”
