Isle of Anglesey County Council

Regional award success for Anglesey developers

Construction developments on the Island were successful at the recent North Wales’ Building Excellence Awards 2019.

Held by Local Authority Building Control (LABC) at St David’s Park, Ewloe, the event celebrates the construction and building success across the region.

Anglesey Council’s Building Control section nominated five local projects for various award categories; as did every other local authority in North Wales.

The nominated developments are dotted across Anglesey, and included residential dwellings and public buildings.

The three LABC winning entries from Anglesey were:

Best Extension or Alteration

‘Shore Cottage’, located in Pentraeth, was developed by Dave Jones Joinery & Building Contractors. The project involved the construction of a large two storey extension located at the beachfront location. Large glazed openings and viewing terraces were provided to take advantage of the views along the coastline.

Best Public Service Building

Menai Science Park (M-Sparc) was developed by Willmott Dixon Construction. M-Sparc is Wales’ first dedicated science park, and the design is modern, sleek and futuristic. The aim of M-Sparc has been to drive growth in knowledge based science, with a focus on low carbon energy, the environment and ICT sectors.

LABC Constructional Professional of the Year

This award went to George Povey, a Site Manager for Anwyl Construction. Anglesey Council has worked with Mr Povey, an experienced construction professional, on a number of occasions. The latest project was the construction of a large housing scheme at Tyddyn Bach, Holyhead.

Anglesey’s Planning and Public Protection portfolio holder, Councillor Richard Dew, attended the award ceremony. He said, “For Anglesey to win three major awards reflects the quality of local construction developments. We are delighted that the judges recognised these projects as high-quality examples of building excellence.

He continued, “Our Building Control section works closely with a high number of developers and these awards also reflect positively on the quality of the team’s supervision and guidance.”

Anglesey’s Building Control Team Leader Alun Rowlands was extremely pleased that three Anglesey nominations were successful on the night and would go forward to the all-Wales Final.

He explained, “The success proves the excellent quality of workmanship undertaken on Anglesey by the five nominees this year, but also highlights the overall high quality of builders on the Island, many of whom were unlucky not to be nominated this year as well.”

President of LABC, Dave Sharp, said “The North Wales Building Excellence Awards provide recognition for all people engaged in construction projects who have achieved outstanding quality and building regulation compliance.”

He added, “The scheme highlights the importance of Building Control in achieving high standards of workmanship, safety, welfare and convenience, and gives a well-deserved boost to construction professionals active in the North Wales region.”

Anglesey’s winning entries will now be entered into the Welsh Awards Final event of the LABC Building Excellence Awards, which takes place on the 26th of September in Cardiff.

Ends 27.06.19
