Isle of Anglesey County Council

Political stability and maturity key to council progress

Maintaining political stability and maturity will be key to ensuring the county council can build on progress made in recent years.

Newly re-elected Isle of Anglesey County Council Leader, Councillor Llinos Medi, has pledged to work with every other elected member on behalf of the Island and its communities.

Cllr Llinos Medi, who leads the 21-strong Plaid Cymru group, was today (Tuesday, 24 May) elected unopposed. Her Plaid Cymru group has also opted to work in coalition with members of Y Grŵp Annibynnol (The Independent Group), led by Cllr Ieuan Williams, to lead the County Council.

Speaking after a meeting of the Full Council, Cllr Llinos Medi, said, “This Council made important strides forward during my previous tenure as Council Leader. We must build on the progress made together. The residents of Anglesey deserve to see the political stability and maturity nurtured in recent years flourish. This is key if we are to continue working positively on behalf of our communities and residents.”

“Anglesey has now restored its reputation amongst the local government family in Wales; with both the Welsh Government and the Welsh Audit Office acknowledging significant progress in terms of governance and in key service areas.”

“We will, as always, welcome challenge on policies from opposition party members. Positive and constructive working relationships amongst all elected members must continue and I will do my utmost to ensure that they do.”

The ruling Plaid Cymru group maintains its aim of leading a Council, which performs well in the eyes of residents, partners and regulators. It wants to provide the authority with a strong voice both regionally and nationally too.

Its Manifesto pledges include:

  • a fit for purpose education system and providing children, young people and teaching staff with the best opportunities
  • a care service which serves the whole family as and when they need its support
  • developing an economy which benefits that local companies and communities
  • meeting the challenge of providing suitable housing for local residents and supporting first time buyers
  • responding to the challenges presented by climate change and forging ahead with the Council’s Net Zero Plan

Cllr Llinos Medi added, “The next Council term (five years) will bring significant challenges as we work to protect our services and deliver an ambitious new Corporate Plan on behalf of the people of Anglesey. We must also continue preparations to ensure Anglesey benefits from the significant economic opportunities brought by new nuclear build and other major employment projects.”

“As councillors, our main aim now should be to focus on working with our dedicated workforce to provide the best possible services and ensure that our Island and its young people can prosper in the future.”

Cllr Llinos Medi, 40, represents the Talybolion ward and became the first woman to lead the Isle of Anglesey County Council in 2017.

Her fellow Plaid Cymru councillor, Cllr Carwyn Jones, has also been elected as Deputy Leader of the County Council.
