New basketball facilities help Anglesey clubs

New basketball facilities will allow Holyhead Leisure Centre continue as a centre of excellence and help local clubs to flourish.

The County Council’s Leisure Service recently invested £15,000 in upgrading the basketball hoops, where both the Ynys Môn Celts Basketball Club and Anglesey Hawks Wheelchair Basketball Club train and play.

Both teams joined forces to celebrate by putting on a fantastic night of basketball entertainment at Holyhead on Wednesday. They hosted a series of exhibition fixtures for the Celts junior basketball players, and the Hawks Wheelchair Basketball team, followed by a competitive fixture for the Ynys Môn Celts Men against Llandudno in the NWBA Cup.

Ynys Môn Celts Basketball Club Chairman, Jody McEachern, said,

“We’re very grateful to the Isle of Anglesey County Council for making this significant investment to improve basketball facilities at Holyhead Leisure Centre. This will be hugely beneficial to players of all ages and abilities across Ynys Môn.

”Our club welcomes more than 60 players to training every single week from all over the island and across the Menai. We’re growing at a very quick rate, so this investment is very welcome as it will ensure our club can continue to flourish and become the main centre of excellence for basketball on the Island once again.”

Anglesey’s Leisure portfolio holder, Councillor Carwyn Jones, added, “We are very pleased to have been able to support the Ynys Môn Celts Basketball Club and Anglesey Hawks Wheelchair Basketball Clubs, by investing in valuable equipment for the clubs and players using Holyhead Leisure Centre.”

The Celts train on a Wednesday evening at 6pm at Holyhead Leisure Centre. There is a warm welcome to new members of all ages and experience.
