Isle of Anglesey County Council celebrates St David’s Day in style today (1 March) by promoting the use of the Welsh language in the digital world.

The County Council has now registered the www.ynysmon.llyw.cymru web domain name from the Welsh Government.

The new domain name www.ynysmon.llyw.cymru (and its English equivalent www.anglesey.gov.wales) becomes operational today.

To coincide with this exciting development, the Council is also launching a new section on its website dedicated to the Welsh language. The aim of the new microsite https://www.anglesey.gov.wales/the-welsh-language-on-anglesey is to share information and resources with residents and newcomers to Anglesey about the importance of language locally.

Education and Culture portfolio holder, Councillor Meirion Jones, has long been in favour of adopting the new Welsh web domain.

Cllr Jones said, “It’s fitting that the Council launches this new domain name and Welsh language page on our patron saint’s day. We are proud that Anglesey has always been positive in its promotion of the use of the language in all aspects of life.”

“Wider adoption of the.cymru and .wales domains is helping to put Wales and the Welsh language on the map in the digital world. By adopting .cymru, Ynys Môn can play its part in this. I hope that our decision will encourage other public bodies to embrace this technological development and raise the profile and presence of Wales and the Welsh language online.”

The old www.anglesey.gov.uk address will be replaced by the new one on Council publications when they expire and will still be in operation until all digital systems have been updated accordingly.

Staff will also adopt the Welsh ynysmon.llyw.cymru addresses for e-mails in due course.

Anglesey’s Welsh Language portfolio holder, Cllr Ieuan Williams, added, “This is an important step forward in our efforts to promote and encourage the use of the Welsh language in everything that we do as a Council.”
