New Amlwch 3G to open in September

Posted on 29 July 2022

A new £130,000 state of the art 3G sports pitch is set to open at Amlwch Leisure Centre in September.

The new pitch will replace the existing outdoor five-a-side pitch and Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) at the Leisure Centre.

The project will be funded with a £75,000 grant from Sports Wales and a £55,000 contribution by the county council.

Deputy Leader and Economic Development Portfolio Holder, Cllr Carwyn Jones said, “This will be the fourth 3G pitch on the island (following investment at David Hughes Leisure Centre, Holyhead Park and Plas Arthur Leisure Centre), which clearly highlights our commitment to ensure that high quality facilities are available for all Anglesey residents.”

He added, “I would like to thank Sports Wales for recognising the importance of this project and for awarding us with this grant. I would also like to thank our Officers for their hard work in preparing and presenting the successful grant application.”

Special shock pads will be installed under the surface of the new 3G sports pitch, making it suitable for both football and rugby training. The pitch will also be marked for walking football training and matches.

Head of Regulation and Economic Development, Christian Branch, explained, “The new 3G pitch will provide local clubs, schools and the local community with access to a high quality sports and training area all-year round, regardless of the weather – it will be double the size of the current pitch at the Leisure Centre.”

He added, “This project underlines our continuous commitment to improve leisure facilities across the Island. It will provide local residents with more opportunities to get involved in sports and physical activity.”

As with other 3G pitches on the Island, the facility will be made available to the local secondary school during the day and sports clubs/residents during the evenings.

News that work is to begin on the new project has been welcomed by the Twrcelyn ward’s county councillors, Cllrs Aled Morris-Jones, Derek Owen and Liz Wood.

They said, “We are pleased, as local members, to see this investment in Amlwch. The new 3G pitch will be an important community resource for the town and wider Twrcelyn ward. We hope to see it benefit both junior and senior sporting teams; and provide a quality facility for all to enjoy.”

The Leisure Centre’s tennis courts will also be re-marked as part of the project.
