Anglesey County Council have secured vital funding for a new 3G sports pitch at Amlwch Leisure Centre.
The new £100,000 state of the art sports pitch will replace the existing outdoor five-a-side pitch and Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) at the Leisure Centre.
The project will be funded with a £75,000 grant from Sports Wales and a £25,000 contribution by the County Council.
Economic Development and Major Projects Portfolio Holder, Councillor Carwyn Jones said, “The new 3G pitch at Amlwch Leisure Centre will be a fantastic asset for the local community and sports clubs.”
He added, “I would like to thank Sports Wales for recognising the importance of this project and for awarding us with this grant. I also wish to thank our Officers for their hard work in preparing and presenting the successful grant application.”
Special shock pads will be installed under the surface of the new 3G sports pitch, making it suitable for both football and rugby training.
Head of Regulation and Economic Development, Christian Branch, explained, “The new 3G pitch will provide local clubs, schools and the local community with access to a high quality sports and training area all-year round, regardless of the weather – it will be double the size of the current pitch at the Leisure Centre.”
He added, “This will be the fourth 3G pitch on the Island following investment at David Hughes Leisure Centre, Holyhead Park and Plas Arthur Leisure Centre. Our continuous commitment to improve leisure facilities on the Island will provide local residents with more opportunities to get involved in sports and physical activity.”
As with other 3G pitches on the Island, the facility will be made available to the local secondary school during the day and sports clubs/residents during the evenings.
Brian Davies, Sport Wales Acting Chief Executive said; “We are thrilled, having secured additional funding from Welsh Government, to be able to support projects across Wales, including the multi-sport 3G pitch development with Anglesey County Council. This facility will allow local people to access football and rugby throughout the year.”
“Developments and facility enhancements, such as this one in Amlwch, will help the sector in its aim to provide the opportunity to be physically active to every person in Wales.”
It is expected that the new 3G pitch will be available for use by Summer 2022.
