More open days to encourage over 50s to get active are being planned after an initial event proved popular with residents.
Amlwch Leisure Centre recently held the first in a series of open days that will be hosted in Centres across the island.
The event was a joint effort between the council’s Adult Services and Môn Actif leisure service. The event followed a successful round of open days earlier this year.
Participants in the Amlwch open day had the opportunity to engage in a variety of free leisure activities, including:
- pickleball
- badminton
- fitness Room
- group exercise class
- adult learning
Partner organisations including Age Friendly Anglesey, Môn CF, Gorwel, Age Cymru Gwynedd a Môn, and others also attended to provide those taking part with information about local services and opportunities within their communities.
The open day received a positive response, with those in attendance showing their appreciation for the range of activities and services on offer. Provisions such as the library service’s audiobooks for the visually impaired, information about the island’s community groups as well as a taster session of various leisure activities all proved popular with the participants.
Dementia Actif Môn Officer, Eban Geal explained, “The aim of these open days is to provide various activities to those over the age of 50 to improve their confidence as well as promoting their general wellbeing. It also offers residents the opportunity to socialise with one another and learn about different the different services that are available.”
Anglesey Council’s Age Friendly Communities Development Officer, Sioned Young said, “As an age-friendly island, we’re always working to remove any barriers that may restrict people from ageing well. The open days enable people to access information face to face, socialise, and have a go at a variety of leisure activities in a welcoming and friendly environment.”
Leisure, Tourism and Maritime portfolio holder, Councillor Neville Evans added, “This type of event highlights the inclusivity of activities that are available to residents. The council’s Aging Well Strategy 2022 to 2027 highlights the need for the council to support people of all ages to live and age well. Providing sufficient provisions and highlighting the available services is a great way of doing just that.”
Future open days have been planned at Canolfan Beaumaris (24 November 10am to 3:30pm), Holyhead Leisure Centre (22 January 2024 10am to 3pm) and at Plas Arthur Leisure Centre, Llangefni (19 March 2024 10am-3pm).
