The County Council has worked with the local community to find solutions to persistent flooding and recently secured significant funding from the Welsh Government.
The major flood alleviation scheme will provide essential protection to homes and businesses previously devastated in the seaside town during heavy rainfall.
Main contractor, Dawnus, will undertake the six-month scheme in two phases in the town:
- Phase 1 of the works involves laying two 1500mm diameter pipes through Castle Meadow and across the B5109 with the outfall at the sea wall.
- Phase 2 involves laying surface water drainage pipes in Stanley Street, Maes Hyfryd and Wexham Street, which will require phased road closures for some elements of work.
Anglesey’s Highways, Property and Waste portfolio holder, Councillor Bob Parry, said, “The town of Beaumaris has suffered from major flooding in recent years and extreme weather related incidents are on the increase.”
“We are grateful to Welsh Government for their support through grant funding, which has been match-funded by the County Council. This major new scheme will complement previous works undertaken in and around the town.”
He added, “We have also been successful in acquiring funding for flood investigation studies in Llanfairpwll, Menai Bridge, Valley and Holyhead. We also continue to work closely with Natural Resources Wales and Dŵr Cymru to investigate flooding problems and develop potential long-term solutions in Llangefni and Dwyran. Smaller scale schemes are also been developed for Pentraeth and Llansadwrn.”
The works are being carried out during the quieter winter months to minimise disruption and any impact on the tourism trade. Works will start in January 2019 and are expected to finish mid-June. Whilst there will likely be some disruption, the scheme will benefit residents and businesses in the long term.
The scheme has the backing of Seiriol county councillors, Carwyn Jones, Lewis Davies and Alun Roberts. They said, “We are grateful to Anglesey’s Highways Service and Welsh Government for the funding provided to help alleviate flood risk to the residents and business in Beaumaris and other parts of Anglesey.”
“As local members, we are well aware of the devastation caused by flooding over the years. This scheme will, therefore, be essential in protecting residents and businesses of Beaumaris and safeguarding its economy and historical significance.”
Beaumaris Castle car park will be closed from January 7th 2019. Access to the allotments maintained and the County Council is working with Beaumaris Town Council to secure suitable alternative parking arrangements for coaches.
A detailed traffic management plan is being prepared to minimise any disruption as much as possible and ensure timely progress. More details information will be available once this plan has been finalised.
Road closures will be required on Wexham Street, Maes Hyfryd and Stanley Street; and alternative routes have been advertised in local newspapers.
