Ynys Môn will proudly welcome the King’s Baton Relay next week as part of a celebration of sport, community spirit and inspiration ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
On Tuesday (23 June), the baton relay will travel across the island, with highlights including a special trip down the Menai Strait and a scenic leg through Coed Cyrnol in Menai Bridge; a community celebration at Trearddur Bay, complete with RAF fly-past; and a special visit to Ysgol y Bont in Llangefni.
Along the way, the baton will be carried by a range of inspirational individuals, including Commonwealth Games champions, elite athletes and local role models who contribute to sport and physical activity across Anglesey.
The visit will shine a spotlight on the importance of staying active, encouraging residents of all ages to take part in sport and enjoy the physical and mental wellbeing benefits it brings. Activities throughout the day will also involve schools, community groups and local organisations.
Anglesey Chief Executive, Dylan J. Wiliams, said, “Welcoming the King’s Baton Relay to Ynys Môn is a great honour for the island. It is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate sporting achievement, recognise the contribution of our talented athletes and, importantly, inspire our communities to lead active and healthy lives. We are proud to play a part in this special journey across Wales and beyond.”
“We’re also delighted that Anglesey’s very own Cari Hughes has been called up to the Wales athletics team for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
She’ll be competing in the 3000m Steeplechase on Monday 27 July. Pob lwc Cari!”
Leisure portfolio holder, Councillor Alun Roberts, added, “It is a privilege to see the baton arrive on Ynys Môn and to showcase our communities on this national stage. I would like to thank all the baton bearers for the role they play in promoting sport and inspiring others. My sincere thanks also go to our MônActif leisure team for their hard work in working alongside Team Wales to organise this exciting visit, which, I hope, will leave a lasting legacy for participation in sport across the island.”
Rebecca Edwards-Symmons, CEO of Team Wales, said, “Day 5 of the King’s Baton Relay perfectly captures what sport means to communities across Wales. From the waters of the Menai Strait to the shores of Trearddur Bay and into the heart of Canolfan Addysg Y Bont, we are celebrating not only our incredible landscapes but the people who bring sport to life every day. This journey is about connection, inspiration and ensuring that everyone, regardless of background or ability, feels part of Team Wales.”
The county council also recognises the efforts of volunteers, partners and community organisations who have helped make the day possible, ensuring a warm Anglesey welcome for the Baton.
Residents are encouraged to come along, support the baton bearers, and take part in the celebrations.
