History, nature, and countryside activities will all be celebrated on Saturday as part of the Holy Island Landscape Partnership’s first Heritage Fair.
Located at the Holyhead Breakwater Country Park, the free event will include guided walks, sheep shearing, traditional woodland skills, country crafts and information stalls.
There will also be plenty of fun activities for children, including history and nature-based crafts, archery, and clay modelling, making it fun for all the family.
As part of the Landscape Partnership’s 'Conserving Our Traditional Boundaries' project, a stone-walling competition will be held at the Quillet fields near Pentre Mynydd. Prizes will be awarded to professional, amateur, novice/juniors and veterans categories. Erected by local quarrymen, the Quillets are a unique field system located on Holyhead Mountain.
The partnership is working with local secondary schools, youth organisations and volunteers to repair and restore this distinctive heritage landscape feature for the future.
There will be an opportunity for the recording of local place names, fields, and features with the Welsh Place Name Society. There will also be a nature walk led by North Wales Wildlife Trust to the auk colony at North Stack as well as guided history walks.
The Holy Island Landscape Partnership is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and works with local communities to deliver activities that identify, explore, conserve, and share the unique and fascinating heritage and environment of Holy Island.
Holy Island Landscape Partnership Community Project Officer, Paul Edwards explained, “The Partnership’s vision is to raise awareness of the fascinating and unique history, landscape, and nature on Holy Island with local communities, schools, and visitors. Through promoting a better understanding of the heritage of the area we hope to foster a sense of place that will ensure historical assets are celebrated and protected for future generations. We are grateful to all our partners who will be providing interesting and fun activities for all ages on the day.”
The partnership’s 19 projects include accessing our heritage, heritage skills, local learning, discovering our hidden heritage, controlling invasives and enjoying our coast responsibly.
Leisure, tourism and maritime portfolio holder, Councillor Neville Evans said: “The fair will showcase some of the brilliant work undertaken by The Holy Island Landscape Partnership as they work towards the aims outlined in our Destination Management Plan and AONB Management Plan. It gives residents and visitors the opportunity to learn more about the local area as well as taking part in a variety of different activities.”
The fair will take place at the Holyhead Breakwater Country Park on Saturday 1 July 2023, 10am to 4pm.
Pay and display parking will be available with free overflow parking located at the field adjacent to Breakwater Road. Food and drink will also be available at the fair.
