Isle of Anglesey County Council

Expanded beach wheelchair provision for Anglesey beaches

For the fourth-year running, beach wheelchairs will be available at Benllech and Llanddwyn, ensuring all residents and visitors can enjoy Anglesey’s coastline.

Thanks to grant funding from Natural Resources Wales, Isle of Anglesey County Council has expanded its provision of specially adapted wheelchairs designed for use on sand.

The wheelchairs have large, smooth tyres and a rugged frame, making it possible to travel across soft sand and improving access to the beach.

The initiative is further supported by the council's maritime service, whose seasonal beach wardens help visitors on beaches across the island.

Natural Resources Wales has also installed a moveable, roll-out ‘Mobi-Mat’, made from recycled plastic, to improve beach access at Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest.

This summer, Benllech Beach will offer two adult beach wheelchairs and one child wheelchair, while Llanddwyn Beach will provide one adult and one child wheelchair.

The continued success of the scheme is made possible through close partnership working between the Isle of Anglesey County Council, Natural Resources Wales, the council's beach wardens and The Bay Café (Benllech) – helping to make Anglesey’s coastline more accessible for everyone.

Leisure, Tourism, Maritime and Property portfolio holder, Councillor Alun Roberts, said,

“This scheme supports the Council Plan’s priorities around wellbeing, inclusion and helping people to live well in their communities. By expanding beach wheelchair provision, we are helping more residents and visitors to access and enjoy Anglesey’s coastline safely and independently, and we are grateful to Natural Resources Wales and all partners involved in delivering this service.”

Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Warden, Owen Davies, added:

“Anglesey’s coastline is something people really value, and it’s important that as many people as possible can experience it first-hand. Whether it’s Benllech or Llanddwyn, seeing visitors being able to get down onto the sand and enjoy the beach is really rewarding, and this service helps make that possible.”

Advance booking is essential for all users. Due to demand and staffing capacity at Llanddwyn, visitors wishing to use the service are strongly advised to book at least one week in advance.
