Charitable association looking for new secretary

A unique charitable association, which manages a £22m funding pot on behalf of Anglesey communities, is looking to appoint a new secretary.

For almost three decades, the Isle of Anglesey Charitable Trust distributed the proceeds of the Shell (UK) legacy fund amongst worthy causes. Last year, it passed on that responsibility to the newly formed Isle of Anglesey Charitable Association.

The Isle of Anglesey Charitable Association, also known as Y Gymdeithas, will provide a new governance model and flexibility needed to make the best possible future use of this vital funding.

As a result, Y Gymdeithas is now looking at appoint a new secretary to take its charitable vision forward; develop its own identity and pursue various innovative activities to reach its charitable objectives for the people of Anglesey.

With the new Secretary becoming its policy and administrative officer, potential candidates must have strong interpersonal and business skills, a proven track record in the world of work and an interest in promoting the interests of the Island and its people.

Y Gymdeithas Chairman, Trefor Lloyd Hughes, explained, “Over the last 30 years, the old Charitable Trust awarded substantial grant funding to various organisations and charitable causes. The positive effect of this important financial support has been felt across the length and breadth of our Island.”

He added, “We now want to ensure that Anglesey communities benefit for many more years to come as Y Gymdeithas continues its work. We are looking to appoint a new secretary who will work with trustees and lead in the development of a new vision and help promote the interests of the Island and its residents for many years to come.”

Y Gymdeithas currently comprises of elected county councillors as trustees. However, the new model will also allow the appointment of a least two independent trustees in the future.

Notes to Editors:

The Isle of Anglesey Charitable Trust was founded in 1990 to manage a capital fund negotiated with Shell (UK) after it ceased operating its oil terminal in Amlwch and associated tank farm at Rhosgoch.

It has since awarded millions as part of an annual grants programme, for voluntary and community groups, and regeneration projects. The sale of the former Shell site in 2015 also bolstered the fund by £3m, allowing it to invite applications for larger grants.
