Call for potential development sites on Anglesey

Isle of Anglesey County Council is inviting people to offer land which may be suitable for development over the next 15 years.

Anglesey’s ‘call for candidate sites’ opens today (Monday 12 May) and represents the latest milestones on its journey to create a new Local Development Plan (LDP) for the county by 2028.

Welsh Government requires all local planning authorities to prepare a local development plan to decide which developments are granted planning permission.

When adopted, Anglesey’s LDP will deliver land use development strategy concentrating on sustainable development up to 2039.

Its aim will be to:

  • guide the development of housing, retail, employment and other uses
  • include policies which will aid the local planning authority’s decisions when considering planning applications
  • protect areas to ensure the maintenance and enrichment of the natural and built environment

More information on the Local Development Plan – and how to submit a candidate site - can be found on our website.

Candidate sites can be submitted until 4 August 2025. Completed candidate site forms will be included on the ‘Candidate Site Register’.

Planning, Public Protection and Climate Change portfolio holder, Councillor Nicola Roberts, said, “Our new Local Development Plan will provide a blueprint for land development until 2039 and so it’s significance cannot be underestimated.

“The new LDP will cover the Anglesey Local Planning Authority area, and seek to address local housing, employment, social and environmental needs up to 2039.”

She added, “Many residents, groups and organisations will have a keen interest in matters relating to the development of a new LDP.”

Anglesey’s Head of Economic Development and Regulation, Christian Branch, explained, “From today, we’re asking the public, local communities and landowners to submit potential candidate sites which may be suitable for development or protection, as part of the preparation for the new Anglesey Local Development Plan.”

“We need as much information as possible about parcels of land that may be considered suitable. Residents wishing to have land placed on the Candidate Site Register should fill in the online form and return it to us by 4 August 2025.”

He added, “This information will help evaluate the land as to its suitability under the new plan and move forward.”

The fact that land appears on the ‘Candidate Site Register’ does not oblige the county council to include it in the final LDP, but it helps inform choices about land use in the future.

The online submission form enables site proposers to produce and submit a map, obtain constraints information, view the site submission guidance notes and upload relevant documents. Paper copies will also be available for collection from County Offices and Anglesey Business Centre (Llangefni) and all of the island’s libraries.

Relevant officers can assist with the form if necessary – but an appointment should be made in advance.

The county council will also have to prepare a ‘deposit’ version of the plan for consideration by an independent inspector appointed by Welsh Government. People will still retain their right to make formal representations and objections about proposed development land during the plan’s deposit stage.

Ends 12 May 2025
