Oriel Môn is delighted to host a wonderful exhibition by Swansea based artist Sian McGill on the 10th of August.
Sian was born on St David’s Day 1973 in Pontypool, South Wales. After gaining a degree in English at Swansea University, she returned to a childhood love of art, pursuing this alongside bringing up her young family. Painting soon became a passion, and has now become a full-time occupation. She exhibits at galleries across England and Wales and has had work selected for the Royal Cambrian Academy.
Sian’s inspiration comes directly from the places where she loves to be, outdoors enjoying the coastline and mountains of Wales. She says “The paintings are a response to the landscape, an attempt to capture something of the experience and the energy of a place – how it feels to be there at the moment”.
An expressive and intuitive painter, she works mostly with a palette knife, but also paints with brushes, or fingers or whatever else comes to hand to get the desired effect. She enjoys experimenting with mark-making, colour and texture to create a variety of effects which often leads to a degree of unpredictability, allowing the paintings to emerge almost by themselves.
Nicola Gibson, Visitor Experience Manager, Oriel Môn, stated. “We have been looking forward to exhibit Sian’s work for some time now. Although based in South Wales the majority of the landscapes on show are local scenes that will be recognisable to many. She is very knowledgeable of her medium, her work shows a true freedom as she spontaneously manipulates the paint on the canvas”.
Sian’s exhibition can be seen until the 22nd of September. There will be a warm welcome for everyone during the launch of the exhibition between 12.00pm and 2.00pm on the 10th of August.
