Isle of Anglesey County Council

Anglesey’s voice heard at new Islands Forum

The Isle of Anglesey was delighted to represent Wales at the UK’s first ever Islands Forum last week.

Islands from Scotland, Northern Ireland and England also attend the event held in Orkney, and chaired by the UK Government’s Minister for Intergovernmental Relations, Nadhim Zahawi.

The forum is seen as a way to provide regular engagement between the UK Government, devolved governments and island communities to ensure their needs and common challenges are reflected in UK policy, decision making and distribution of funding.

Anglesey’s Finance portfolio holder, Councillor Robin Williams, welcomed the chance to attended the Forum in Orkney on behalf of the County Council.

Cllr Williams said, “The forum provided a unique opportunity for Island representatives from across the UK to come together, and work with both the UK Government and devolved governments, to work together on shared opportunities and challenges.”

“Orkney is already considered to be a world leader in terms of wave, tidal and hydrogen energy generation. It was pleasing to see that projects being developed on Anglesey aligns with other Island ambitions, and that we have an opportunity to realise significant economic and community benefits to support the well-being of our residents.”

He added, “We were also pleased to able to showcase the Anglesey Island Programme directly to the Minister and highlight its efforts to tackle the need to decarbonise energy generation in response to our own declared climate emergency.”

Anglesey’s Head of Regulation and Economic Development, Christian Branch, said, “It is important for our voices to be heard at a UK level. Our Islands are characterised by resilient communities, distinctive languages and culture and outstanding natural environments. All contribute significant value to the UK.”

“The Islands Forum provided a firm foundation for future collaboration and co-operation and we look forward to perhaps welcoming its members to our Island one day.”
