Aspiring young scientists continue to benefit from an extraordinary opportunity, made possible by the generosity of a family from Llangefni.
The Tomos Wyn Morgan Scholarship, created in 2015, offers one exceptional sixth form science student each year the chance to attend the world-renowned London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF).
Held over two weeks at Imperial College London, the forum brings together more than 500 of the most promising young scientists, aged 16 to 21, from over 70 countries around the globe.
The scholarship was established in memory of Tomos Wyn Morgan, who passed away suddenly in 2014 at the age of 30. As a former student at Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni, Tomos had attended the forum himself, and his family chose to commemorate his life by offering others the same life-enriching experience.
In recent years, Anglesey's most promising young scientists have benefited greatly from attending the forum. This summer, Dylan Thorpe from Ysgol David Hughes (Menai Bridge) was awarded the scholarship.
Dylan said, “I am thrilled to receive this amazing opportunity and am very excited to take part in the 66th LIYSF. I am very grateful to the Morgan family for this unique experience.”
2023 recipient, Milli-Anne Archer from Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern, also spoke highly of the opportunity:
“Attending the London International Youth Science Forum was an amazing experience. I was able to enjoy lectures and demonstrations from leading scientists and visit world class laboratories and universities. It was also a great chance to meet new people, interested in science, from all over the world.”
The Morgan family continue to sponsor the £2,000 scholarship annually. It is awarded on their behalf by Isle of Anglesey County Council, after pupil submissions are assessed by an independent expert.
Tomos’ parents explained, “Tomos was a gifted young man and fortunate enough to be chosen to attend the London International Youth Science Forum when he was in school. It was a great inspiration to him and broadened his horizons. He was stimulated by the excellence of the lectures and met young people from other walks of life who remained friends until his death.”
“Tomos’ intention was to come back to Wales to set up an enterprise that would benefit local people. He would be pleased to think that his legacy is giving more young people from Anglesey, like Dylan, the same rewarding opportunity that he had whilst attending the science forum in London.”
Anglesey’s Education and Welsh Language portfolio holder, Councillor Dafydd Roberts, said, “This scholarship provides a truly transformative experience for some of our county’s brightest students. It enables them to connect with peers from across the globe and deepen their passion for science.”
He added, “We are incredibly grateful to the Morgan family. Their continued support ensures that Tomos’ legacy lives on - helping to inspire and nurture the next generation of scientists from Anglesey.”
