Anglesey marks Dementia Action Week 2024

Isle of Anglesey County Council has marked Dementia Action Week 2024, an annual campaign that brings people together to highlight dementia.

Several activities have been held to raise awareness of the week and underline the support that is available for people living with dementia, those caring for them and their families.

The activities organised by the county council’s Dementia Actif Môn team also encouraged residents to learn more about the different types of dementia, and the ways in which they can reduce their risk of developing the condition. The activities organised included:

  • Monday 13 May – council officers attended Asda to raise awareness about dementia and the services/support available on the island.
  • Tuesday 14 May – an open day at Anglesey’s Dementia Centre (Glanhwfa Centre) was organised. Various activities were provided throughout the day and information stalls were available to provide residents with more information.
  • Thursday 16 May – a dementia-friendly walk at Plas Newydd (in partnership with the Natural Trust) where people living with dementia and their carers got free access to a walk around the gardens of Plas Newydd.

Friendly Age Champion, Councillor Gwilym Jones, said “Dementia Action Week provides us with a vital opportunity to shine a light on dementia. Here on Anglesey, we are committed to support people living with the condition, their loved ones, carers and making sure they have access to support.”

He added., “Dementia affects nearly a million of people across the UK, and as a dementia-friendly island we are committed to ensure that there are no barriers for people living with dementia, their families and those caring for them.”

National Dementia Action Week is an annual event organised by the Alzheimer’s Society.

Anglesey’s Dementia Project Officer, Eban Geal, explained, “It was fantastic to see hundreds of people attend various activities throughout the week. I would like to thank all community and voluntary groups on Anglesey that provide endless support to those people living with dementia, their carers and families.”
