More than 23 years after starting his career as a social worker on Anglesey, Fôn Roberts has been appointed as the County’s new Director of Social Services.
Social Services play a huge significance to the life of so many vulnerable on children and adults on Anglesey. In his new role as Director of Social Services, Fôn has a legal duty to safeguard and promote their welfare.
He has held the role of Interim Director of Social Services since June 2020; having previously worked as Head of Service for Children and Families.
Fôn said, “I have 23 years’ experience as a qualified and registered Social Worker and my passion has always been to deliver the best possible care and services to the most vulnerable in our community.”
“Working these past seven months as part of a team dealing with a worldwide pandemic has certainly been one of my biggest professional challenges to date. But it has been a challenge that I have relished. There has never been a more important time to deliver care to the most vulnerable children and adults in our communities.”
He added, “I’m privileged to take on the role of Anglesey’s Director of Social Services on a permanent basis. I will continue to work with colleagues, elected members and our many partners to do my utmost for the people of Ynys Môn.”
Fôn’s time as interim has already seen innovation to improve outcomes for looked after children and greater recruitment of County Council foster carers, allowing more children to continue living on the Island.
He also looks forward to developing further partnership initiatives to promote the well-being of people who need care and support, as well as carers who need support.
Council Leader and Social Services portfolio holder, Councillor Llinos Medi, welcomed the new appointment.
She said, “This is as a hugely important appointment for the authority, given the role’s statutory duties under the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014.”
“Fôn brings a wealth of experience to the role, having worked in a number of local authorities across Wales and England. He also brings great enthusiasm and, most importantly, an understanding of local needs. I look forward to working closely with him on behalf of the people of Ynys Môn.”
