Acclaimed artist Pete Jones’ latest collection ‘Cynefin’ opens at Oriel Môn

On Saturday 21 June, acclaimed artist Pete Jones celebrates the opening of his latest exhibition ‘Cynefin’ at the prestigious Oriel Môn Art Gallery, Llangefni, Anglesey.

Following on from his successful joint-exhibition ‘Beyond the Mountains’ with fellow artist Louise Morgan RCA at Plas Glyn-y-Weddw last year, Pete Jones’ latest collection is a deeply personal and thought-provoking exploration of the Welsh concept of ‘Cynefin’.

It signifies the multiple, intertwined factors in our environment and experiences that influence us all. ‘Cynefin’ shapes how we think, interpret and act, carrying with it a sense of rootedness - temporal, physical, cultural and spiritual. Pete’s new inspiring exhibition ‘Cynefin’ reflects and encompasses all these elements, and features several small pieces completed during the late 1970s, with the main body of work completed between 2023 and 2025.

Pete Jones was born and raised in Bangor, Wales. After studying at Chester School of Art he completed a degree in fine art (painting) at Loughborough College of Art & Design in 1983. Upon completing his studies, he joined the NHS and trained as a learning disability nurse supporting vulnerable people for over 30 years - he intermittently accepted a range of commissions during his nursing career before returning to full time painting in 2016.

Pete’s first major solo exhibition at Oriel Ynys Môn in 2019 was considered by Wales Arts Review to be “amongst the top 10 visual arts exhibitions in Wales”, with 13 portraits of former patients from Bryn-y-Neuadd Hospital (where he worked for many years) subsequently being accepted into the Welsh national collections at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, and National Museum of Wales, Cardiff.

His work is also housed within civic and private collections across the world including the UK, Germany, Australia and Canada.

Sharing his thoughts about the upcoming exhibition ‘Cynefin’, Pete said, “There is a thread that weaves itself throughout my work. Painting is my emotional response to people and places. I cannot predict the outcomes of the process of painting but aspire to capture the essence of a place, a moment in time, or the spirit of a person. My new exhibition will feature a collection of paintings that explore “Cynefin” from a range of perspectives.”

The ‘Cynefin’ exhibition launch event, hosted by Pete Jones, takes place on Saturday 21 June 2025 at 12 - 2pm in the main art gallery of Oriel Môn. It is an open event and all are most welcome to attend.

Pete has also written a book to accompany ‘Cynefin’ - this will be available to purchase at the event and for the duration of the exhibition. He will also be hosting an additional event to officially launch the book at Storiel, Bangor on 27 June 2025 at 2pm.

‘Cynefin’ the exhibition will run from 21 June until 27 July 2025 at the Oriel Môn Art Gallery, Llangefni, which is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am until 5pm.
