Isle of Anglesey County Council

Disabled Facilities Grant

Overview

You may be able to get a grant from Isle of Anglesey County Council if you are disabled and need to make changes to your home.

For example, you:

  • are physically disabled
  • have a learning disability
  • have age-related needs
  • are autistic
  • have a cognitive impairment, like dementia
  • have a progressive condition, like motor neurone disease
  • have a terminal illness
  • have a mental health condition

A Disabled Facilities Grant does not affect any benefits you get.

Things you may want to do in your home

You may want to:

  • widen doors and install ramps or grab rails
  • make it easier to get around your home, such as fitting a stairlift, or being able to get into your shower
  • improve access to your garden
  • build an extension, such as a downstairs bedroom
  • provide a heating system suitable for your needs
  • adapt heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use

How to apply for the Disabled Facilities Grant

How much you can get

The amount of money you get from the grant will depend on the work that needs to be done.

The most grant money that Isle of Anglesey County Council will give you is £36,000.

Grant payments up to £10,000 are not means tested.

When the grant payment is more than £10,000, a means test (a check of how much money you have available yourself) may be needed to see whether you can contribute towards the grant cost yourself.

Grant payments over £10,000 will result in a local land charge being registered against the property. We can explain this to you, if you do not understand what this means. This will not happen if the grant payment is for a child.

Do not start any work before applying

Do not start any work before applying for the grant. This may stop you getting the grant.

How you get the money

Grant payments will normally be paid directly to the contractor who you have asked to do the work.

This payment is either made when the work is finished or in stages as the work is being done.

Who can claim the grant

You, or someone you live with, must:

  • be disabled
  • intend to live in the property for at least 5 years (this can be a shorter period of time if someone is terminally ill, for example)

Who can apply

The person who applies must be either the:

  • owner
  • tenant
  • landlord

What the council does

The council will make sure what work needs to be done to meet your needs.

The Social Services Department must confirm that the work is necessary and appropriate to meet your needs.

Housing Services will also need to make sure that the work is reasonable and practical, looking at the age and condition of your home.

Planning permission

You may need planning permission for any work that is carried out. You may also need building regulations approval.

You will need to apply separately for this.

You may also need to employ an architect or a surveyor. If you get the grant, you can use the money towards these costs.

How to apply

If want to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant, talk to your occupational therapist.

If you do not have an occupational therapist, contact the Housing Department and ask for a visit. The contact details are on this page.
