Notice to Mariners: Joint Amlwch Port and Eastern Menai Strait notice 4 April 2026
Number: 02 /2026
Issued by the harbourmaster on 4 April 2026
Notice is hereby given that the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has issued Marine Guidance Note MGN 715 (M+F), setting out recommended best practice to encourage respectful and safe operation between different types of water users in shared maritime spaces.
The variety of users in our local waters has increased significantly (including recreational craft, commercial vessels, personal watercraft, paddle sports, swimming groups, and autonomous or remotely operated vessels). This mixture of users brings additional navigational risks, particularly in confined or busy areas.
MGN 715 aims to:
- Inform less-experienced water users of their responsibilities within the maritime environment; and
- Remind experienced water users of their obligations, particularly where diverse activities overlap.
Water users are strongly encouraged to familiarise themselves with the guidance relating to:
- navigation and watchkeeping – including responsibilities under the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) and the local harbour byelaws or directions
- effective communication between all users.
- safe and respectful sharing of maritime space, including situational awareness, speed control, and avoiding endangering or intimidating other users.
The full MGN can be viewed at the MCA website.
This notice will remain in force until 31 December 2026 unless otherwise updated.
