An unauthorised encampment is a group of caravans or vehicles on land without the permission of the landowner or occupier.
Once land ownership has been established, the council will visit the site as soon as possible to assess:
- the condition and cleanliness of the site
- any disruption to local residents, businesses or landowners
- whether the encampment is obstructing a highway or public right of way
- any concerns reported to the police
- any welfare or humanitarian needs of those staying on the site
The council will ask those occupying the site to move on and will usually seek to agree a reasonable timescale for them to leave.
