National Landscape

Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are now known as National Landscapes. This new name better reflects the national importance of these special places and the vital role they play in nature recovery, climate resilience, heritage, health and wellbeing.

While the name has changed, the legal designation and purpose remain the same: to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the landscape for current and future generations.

The move to National Landscape also brings these protected areas together under a clearer, more recognisable identity, helping more people understand their value and the work being done with local communities, landowners, partners and visitors to care for them.

This change marks a renewed commitment to protecting and restoring our most treasured landscapes, while supporting the people and places that make them unique.
