Isle of Anglesey County Council wants to hear from organisations and other stakeholders who have an interest in the future of Anglesey’s town centres.
Strategic plan
This is a county-wide strategic plan for achieving the aim set out in our new Council Plan (2023 to 2028) of ‘improving the vitality and viability of our town centres’.
Town centres across Wales and the UK have seen very significant changes, including the growth in edge or out-of-town retail, a loss of many traditional uses such as banks, and a large growth in online shopping during the recent pandemic.
Some town centres have been able to adjust and remain vibrant, but others are clearly struggling, and they need to develop different roles if they are to thrive, and new ideas and approaches are needed.
Anglesey’s towns and town centres are focal points for many of the Island’s economic, social and cultural activities. As well as accommodating hundreds of businesses and thousands of jobs, they are also important hubs for many services and facilities, as places to visit for hospitality or events, as focal points for culture and heritage, and as places to live.
This strategic plan proposes mechanisms and principles for how the county council and its partners should address the challenges faced by the island’s town centres, and maximise opportunities for their improvement. We wish to see all relevant partners and stakeholders having their say and helping us to shape a practically deliverable approach. The comments received will be considered as part of the process of agreeing a final version of the document before the end of 2023.
Whilst there are many common issues, each of Anglesey’s towns and town centres is unique with its own specific character, needs and opportunities. The initial county-wide strategic plan process will be followed in future months by the preparation of bespoke place making plans for specific towns/town centres based on the principles set out in the strategic plan, with detailed and local consultation and engagement taking place.
