Isle of Anglesey County Council

Anglesey active travel network map review and update: consultation

Purpose

Isle of Anglesey County Council is reviewing its active travel network map (ATNM) as part of its duties set out in the Active Travel (Wales) Act.

We must update our walking, wheeling, and cycling route network every 5 years and submit to Welsh Government for approval.

We last consulted on the ATNM in 2021. It was approved by Welsh Government in August 2022.

This initial round of engagement aims to gather a first round of feedback from the public on the existing network and the routes proposed within each settlement and longer distance routes.

The designated settlements include:

  • Amlwch
  • Benllech
  • Holyhead
  • Gaerwen
  • Llangefni
  • Llanfairpwll
  • Menai Bridge
  • Valley

Why the active travel network map is (ATNM) important

We can apply for funding from Welsh Government each year to implement the proposed set out on the ATNM.

If routes are not on the map, they are not eligible for funding, so it is important that we understand what matters to Anglesey residents when it comes to its walking, wheeling, and cycling network.

What we mean by 'active travel'

Active travel refers to making every day short journeys by walking, wheeling and cycling (including electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters).

The definition of an active travel journey includes walking, wheeling and cycling to travel to work, school and other educational facilities, the shops, leisure facilities, public transport interchanges.

What we want to know from you

  • Have we identified the correct routes for improvement (future routes)?
  • Are we correct in our assessment of routes that already meet the agreed standards (existing routes)?
  • Have we identified all the appropriate new routes?

Please tell us your thoughts on the active travel network map, and whether you are in agreement with the proposed active travel routes, and if they will be of benefit to you.

Also, this is an opportunity for you to share your thoughts on what other improvements are needed. We would be grateful if you could complete the online survey using the link below.

The consultation closes on 26 March 2026.

What  happens next

We will collect all of your comments from our online mapping tool.

Following on from this round of engagement, we will make further amendments to our draft network before taking this to a 12-week statutory consultation in summer 2026 where you will have another opportunity to provide your thoughts.

We will be submitting the final revised map to Welsh Government for approval in December 2026.

Paper copies of the survey can be arranged for those who are unable to access the online engagement materials.
