New rapid electrical vehicle (EV) charging points are now available for the public to use at five county council-run car parks.

The new dual head rapid EV charging points have been installed at car parks in Amlwch, Holyhead, Llangefni and Menai Bridge.

The county council has secured funding from Welsh Government’s Ultra Low Electric Vehicle (ULEV) Fund for four of the charging points. Internal funding has been utilised to secure an extra EV point at a fifth location.

The pilot project will support the authority’s goal to reach net zero status by 2030.

The installation of rapid EV charging points forms part of the council’s ambitious plans to meet the charging requirements of its residents and visitors to the island – in line with Welsh Government’s electric vehicle charging strategy for Wales.

In delivering the project the county council worked effectively with a number of companies including Alun Griffiths, SP Energy Networks and Swarco.

Head of Service Highways, Waste and Property, Huw Percy said, “I would like to thank the Welsh Government for providing the funding for this pilot project. This project is great news for residents and visitors alike. It means that electric car drivers will now have better access to rapid EV chargers across the island. Installing these new charging points at strategic locations is an essential part of the council’s EV charging plan.”

He added, “It is vital that we continue to do as much work as we can to deliver a network of EV charging points across Anglesey. We have seen an increase of electric vehicles on our roads here on Anglesey, which highlights the need for more EV charging points across the island. The installation of charging points at these sites signals the start of our journey, we are hopeful that more charging points will be installed in the future to further improve the infrastructure across Anglesey.

Tackling climate change is now at the forefront of work and decisions undertaken by the county council. Its ambitious new roadmap towards becoming a carbon neutral organisation by 2030 was recently approved.

The Towards Net Zero Plan 2022-2025 will provide a co-ordinated council response to climate change whilst promoting a cultural shift to ensure that services minimise all greenhouse gas emissions as far as possible.

Highways portfolio holder, Councillor Dafydd Rhys Thomas, said, “I am delighted that these new electric vehicle charging points are now available to use. Investment in EV charging provision is an important part of the council’s climate change commitments. Anglesey already has one of the highest number of EV charging points per head of population in Wales. However, it’s important that we do not rest on our laurels and we continue to improve the provision across the island.”

Providing residents and visitors with accessible and reliable charging infrastructure is an important part of our mission to achieve net-zero by 2030.”

Amlwch: Noddfa Car Park

Holyhead: Victoria Road Car Park

Llangefni: Station Yard Car Park and Town Hall Car Park

Menai Bridge: Library Car Park
