You may be able to get a grant from Isle of Anglesey County Council if you are disabled and need to make changes to your home.

A Disabled Facilities Grant does not affect any benefits you get.

Things you may want to do in your home

You may want to:

  • widen doors and install ramps or grab rails
  • make it easier to get around your home, such as fitting a stairlift, or being able to get into your shower
  • improve access to your garden
  • build an extension, such as a downstairs bedroom
  • provide a heating system suitable for your needs
  • adapt heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use

How to apply for the Disabled Facilities Grant

How much you can get

The amount of money you may get will depend on:

  • your household income
  • how much savings you have over £6,000

The most money that Isle of Anglesey County Council will give you is £36,000

You may need to pay towards any work that is carried out.

Do not start any work before applying for the grant. This may stop you getting the grant.

How you get the money

You will either be paid:

  • as the work goes along
  • in full after the work is finished

The council will give you the money either:

  • when you and Isle of Anglesey County Council is happy with the work that has been carried out
  • when you give the council an invoice from a contractor

If you or a family member carry out any work, the council will only pay towards materials.

Who can claim the grant

You, or someone you live, with must:

  • be disabled
  • intend to live in the property for at least 5 years (this can be a shorter period of time if someone is terminally ill, for example)

Who can apply

The person who applies must be either the:

  • owner
  • tenant
  • landlord

What the council does

The council will check that the work is:

  • necessary and appropriate to meet the needs of the disabled person
  • a reasonable request and that the work is possible, looking at the age and condition of your home

Planning permission

You may need planning permission for any work that is carried out. You may also need building regulations approval.

You will need to apply separately for this.

You may also need to employ an architect or a surveyor. If you get the grant, you can use the money towards these costs.
